South Sudan
The spectrum of Riek Machar continues to hover over South Sudan.
A military spokesperson says attacks on government troops in the past three days have left almost 50 people dead and dozens wounded including soldiers.
There have also been attacks on civilians on major highways leading in and out of South Sudan’s capital, Juba. The army believes Riek Machar’s forces are responsible.
“At the end of it all Riek will be held accountable. For example the attacks on civilians at Jalhak and Rome these were fighters operating under the overall command of Olony. These are very clear things, the same thing in Southern Liech state — the area commanders are known. If we are not able to bring them to justice, the international community will bring Riek Machar to justice,” said Ruai Koang, spokesperson of the South Sudan’s Army.
The army also maintains that South Africa should not have allowed the former vice president into the country, and is calling on the rest of the world to issue a travel ban against Machar, as long as he continues to wage war on South Sudan.
